2013 ITU World Triathlon San Diego Age Grouper Information

The race venue/transition area is located in Mission Beach, while the swim consists of one lap in Ventura Cove. The bike portion will now head out from Mission Beach towards Sunset Cliffs, past Sea World, and features a loop around Fiesta Island, the site of the first-ever triathlon held in September 1974. This course returns to the original roots of triathlon leading up to the 40 year anniversary of the sport. The run portion is along the paths and streets of Mission Beach.

Water temperatures are anticipated to be between 63F (17C) and 66F (19C) degrees in April.

2013 Bike Course

We are excited that the event will remain in Mission Beach, with the finish venue being located at Bonita Cove – as in 2012. The age-group run course will remain unchanged, running along the beautiful beaches in South Mission Beach and following the same course as the elites.

After the 2012 event, we carefully reviewed the bike course layout taking into consideration the feedback we received from many age groupers on the course difficulty and the road conditions. With this in mind, we presented, discussed and reviewed several course options with our contacts at the City of San Diego. We can already confirm that the climb up La Jolla Mesa Drive and the descent down Nautilus Road will no longer be part of the bike course, in part, to provide a safer race experience for our athletes. We are close to publishing the race course details and maps, but still finalizing a few key points with the city. Our focus is to provide participants with a fun – but safe – race course.
